Target vs Walmart: Where Will You Save More?

Target vs Walmart: Where Will You Save More? | thegoodstuff

Say you have a few extra dollars and you want to purchase a few beauty goodies. Do you use a Victoria’s Secret coupon, or try Walmart or Target? Both mass merchant retailers have implemented e-coupons and reward programs, similar to Advance Auto Parts and Harbor Freight coupons, but which one is the best?

Target vs Walmart: Rewards Programs

Walmart recently introduced an app that allows you to scan your receipt and Walmart will cross match prices from other retailers, such as JCPenney or The Children’s Place.  If the app finds a cheaper price somewhere else, the difference is refunded to your Savings Catcher account via an e-gift card that you can use at Walmart. Savings Catcher has no restrictions as to who can sign up. You can use Savings Catcher online or by app, available on Google Play and iTunes.

Target implemented the Red Card program, which gives you a 5 percent discount off your total purchase price. In order to obtain a Red Card, you must link it to your debit card, or apply for a Target credit card. In addition to the Red Card, Target also has coupon app, Cartwheel. Check Cartwheel for a wide selection of beauty department discounts.

Target vs Walmart: Beauty Boxes

Target’s beauty box is a spontaneously released box that features new skin care, hair care and cosmetic samples and coupons. Target’s beauty box is usually seasonal, but there is no set calendar for release and does not automatically draft from your account. Target’s beauty box retails for $7, plus free shipping. Similar cosmetic products and deals can be found using Walgreens coupons.

Walmart recently introduced a beauty box to rival Target. It features new skin care, hair care, and cosmetic samples, and one full-sized product in every box. Most boxes also include coupons to correspond with the samples offered. Walmart’s beauty box is seasonal only and retails for $5 plus free shipping. Sign up for the Walmart beauty box, and you’ll automatically receive a new shipment every season.

Target vs Walmart: In-House Brands and Exclusives

Walmart and Target both have an in-house brand, which are normally priced lower than an equivalent name brand. Walmart’s in-house brand is Equate, which includes pharmacy, health, and beauty items such as aspirin, shaving cream and lotion.

Target’s in-house brand, up & up, carries health and beauty items such as shaving cream, makeup remover wipes, body lotion and sun care, which was the debut product category.

Walmart’s exclusive brands include:

  • Hard Candy Cosmetics, an edgy brand geared towards younger consumers, featuring cosmetics, fashion outerwear and glasses
  • Flower Cosmetics, a cruelty-free cosmetics brand featuring products with natural ingredients
  • Salon Perfect, a salon themed brand featuring products such as eye lashes, nail lacquers and eye brow grooming products

Target’s beauty exclusive brands include:

  • Sonia Kashuk, a cosmetics brand featuring department store quality products at mass merchant prices.
  • pixi by Petra, a cruelty-free cosmetics brand that features products infused with botanicals
  • Laneige, a skin care company featuring products for deep skin hydration

While both stores do carry a vast selection of products, certain types of children’s clothing or beauty care brands may not be present. To find these items you may have better luck checking out Old Navy to get deals on those products.

Target vs Walmart: Price Comparison

Below you will find price comparisons for 10 of my favorite beauty products found at both Walmart and Target.

target vs walmart

As you can see, the price points at Walmart and Target don’t differ TOO much. One product might be cheaper at Walmart, but another is cheaper at Target. By smart shopping with coupons, you can probably make up the different yourself.

So it really comes down to preference — Do you like shopping at Walmart or Target better?
